About Old Tom's Workshop
Old Tom's Workshop is a family-run joinery and furniture business based in Rainford, near St Helens. It makes bespoke wooden furniture, gifts, toys and keepsakes from solid wood for domestic and commercial clients. The services listed are custom office desks, shelves, tables, benches, dining tables, cabinets, bars, gates and outdoor play equipment including mud kitchens, climbing frames, book exchange boxes and bug hotels.
The business works with clients across the UK. Jobs begin with photographs, sketches and ideas from customers, which the workshop develops into designs and finished pieces. Old Tom's Workshop uses both new and reclaimed timbers in hardwood and softwood species, sheet materials and scaffold boards. Traditional hand tool techniques and contemporary wood machining are employed. Office desks are made to any size and height, with steel legs or custom solid wood legs, and finishes include Fiddes Supreme Wax Polish and Osmo Polyx-Oil.
The business was founded in September 2020 by Gyles Wainwright, who inherited woodworking tools and knowledge from his grandfather Tom. The family's woodworking history goes back four generations to 1901, when Edward Wainwright was an apprentice cabinet maker. Tom Wainwright, Edward's son, continued the craft whilst running an electronics business. Old Tom's Workshop considers all domestic and commercial commissions, from large to small projects.
