Plain English Design Ltd is a kitchen and cabinetry business founded in 1992 by Tony Niblock and Katie Fontana. The company designs and handcrafts cupboards for kitchens, pantries, mudrooms, butler's pantries, sculleries, bedrooms, bathrooms, dressing rooms, laundry rooms, libraries and home offices. The work blends traditional Georgian joinery with timeless design, drawing inspiration from classic British interiors.
Plain English operates from workshops in the Suffolk countryside at Stowupland Hall, where all cupboards and kitchens are handcrafted. The business has showrooms in Pimlico, London and also operates in New York and Los Angeles. The design process begins with an initial consultation, and a complimentary design service is offered. Fifty bespoke colours are available exclusively with any Plain English project.
The company was established after Tony and Katie commissioned a traditional painted kitchen for a Suffolk longhouse they were building. The kitchen was featured in House & Garden magazine, generating enquiries that revealed a gap in the market. They approached a local Suffolk joiner to commission a kitchen to their design and specifications. After welcoming clients to their home for a year, they set up in an old tannery and later in a Georgian farmhouse in the Suffolk countryside. As the business grew, outbuildings, barns and stables were converted into workshops and design studios. The company remains rooted in the Suffolk landscape where it first began, though it has built a following across the globe.
